EXPRESSIVE PAINTING

My large-format paintings are created in Munich and focus on the human figure. The expressive painting develops from the working process and combines figure, color, and spontaneous movement.

By extending the brush, the tool itself becomes part of the painting. This results in immediate images whose energy is not planned, but rather develops during the painting process.

Experimentation shapes the working method

Paintings by Jörg Herz, Munich artist

My painting—like my sculptures—focuses on the human figure. The figures do not emerge from a fixed plan, but rather evolve during the painting process. I am less interested in perfect representation than in the energy of a painting and the spontaneity of the moment.

Experimentation is a key component of my working method. For many paintings, I extend the brush with a long handle. This changes movement, distance, and control. The tool itself becomes part of the artistic process, leading to lines, surfaces, and color gradients that would hardly be possible in a conventional way. The conscious renunciation of complete control opens up new possibilities and makes the creative process visible.

The result is large-format paintings on paper with an expressive visual language. Powerful brushstrokes, reduced forms, and vibrant colors characterize the works. Many paintings move between figuration and abstraction, concentrating on the essence of a situation or a posture.

The painting is not intended as an illustration of a story, but as an invitation to connect one’s own thoughts and memories with the image. It is precisely the openness of the representation that allows for different perspectives and leaves room for personal interpretation.
