The chainsaw forgives no mistakes

IT IS FAST, LOUD, AND BRUTAL.

Wooden sculptures form the focus of my artistic work. I create figurative sculptures from solid spruce beams, with the human figure at the centre. I am not interested in idealised figures, but in people with personality, individual traits and a presence that leaves room for one’s own thoughts. Many of my works are life-size or on a scale that allows for an immediate encounter.

All the wooden sculptures are carved exclusively using a chainsaw. I deliberately avoid any further carving, sanding or smoothing. The visible saw marks, the grain of the wood and the natural characteristics of the material are preserved and shape the figures’ expression. The chainsaw is not merely a tool, but an integral part of the creative process. Unintended developments and spontaneous decisions are deliberately incorporated into the form.

Many sculptures are subsequently painted with acrylic paint. The flat application of colour contrasts with the rough surface of the wood and enhances the figure’s impact. Selected works are also cast in bronze or aluminium and painted. This results in sculptures that are suitable for long-term use outdoors and for art in public spaces.

Alongside independent artistic works, sculptures are created for businesses, public sector clients and private individuals. These also include bespoke wooden sculptures based on photographs. A personal photograph can serve as the starting point for an original artistic work. Similarly, sculptures are created from individual ideas, developed specifically for a person, a place or a special occasion. The focus is always on the interplay between material, form and a clear, immediate visual language.
